| Term | Definition |
| Anterior | Located in or towards the front. |
| Apical | Relating to the Apex, i.e. the root of a mature tooth or similar area of an immature tooth before root formation. |
| Arcades | The rows of teeth |
| Bilateral | Occurring on, or affecting both sides. |
| Buccal | Pertaining to or towards the check |
| Buccal Mucosa | The mucous membrane of the inside of the cheek |
| Canines | Teeth found between the cheek teeth & incisors in the mature male horse (very occasionally in the female) |
| Cap | The remnant of a deciduous tooth which covers an erupting permanent tooth and is later shed. |
| Caries | Decay of the enamel, cement or dentine. |
| Caudal | Relating to the back i.e. of the oral cavity or a tooth. |
| Cement | Soft calcified material from which a tooth is made. |
| Cementum | Soft calcified material from which a tooth is made. |
| Clinical Crown | The visible part of the crown above the gum line. |

| Decay | Togo rotten or deteriorate |
| Dentine | bony tissue that forms the bulk of the tooth and increasingly fills the pulp cavity, i.e. with secondary dentine |
| Diastema | A space between teeth. The space between the incisors and the premolars (the interdental space) or to the pathological presence of a gap between adjacent teeth. |
| Enamel | Hard wearing calcium-containing layer of dental tissue. |

| ETR | Exaggerated transverse ridge on occlusal surface of the cheek teeth. |
| Fistula | A tract leading from an internal cavity to the body surface or from one cavity to another i.e. sinus to mouth: usually from an incomplete closing of a wound or abscess. |
| Floating | The removal of the sharp enamel points using a rasp. |
| Gingivitis | Inflammation of the gums. |
| Hook | An overgrowth caused by abnormal wear to anterior or posterior cheek teeth due to malocclusion. |
| Hyperplasia | Reduced or inadequate tissue formation. |
| Infundibulum | Cup like enamel infolding found singular in the centre of incisors and plural (Infundibulae) in upper cheek teeth. |
| Ironical Fistula | An opening between the oral & nasal cavities, most commonly as a result of extraction or abscess. |
| Lateral | Opposite of medial, away from the midline. |
| Lateral Excursion | Lateral movement of the mandible relative to the maxilla. |
| Lingual | Referring to the tongue or in the direction of the tongue |
| Malocclusion | Irregular contact of opposing teeth. |
| Mandible | The lower jaw. |
| Mandibular | Relating to the lower jaw. |
| Mastication | The grinding of food. |
| Maxilla | The Upper jaw. |
| Maxillary | Relating to the upper jaw. |
| Medial | Opposite of lateral, towards the midline. |
| Mucosa | Mucous membrane, involved in absorption and secretion of mucous |
| Necrosis | The death of cells or tissue from serious injury or disease, especially in a localised area. |
| Occlusion | Surface to surface contact between teeth. |
| Ossification | Ossification is the process of bone formation, in which connective tissues, such as cartilage are turned to bone or bone-like tissue. |
| Periodontal | "Around or near the teeth" usually refers to tissues that surround the neck and root of a tooth. |
| Periodontitis | Inflammation of tissue surrounding a tooth or of periodontal ligaments (A painful condition, often resulting in poor mastication, quidding and finally severe weight loss) |
| Posterior | Behind or towards the back. |
| Premaxilla | The bone which houses the upper incisors. |
| Pulp Cavity | Cavities in the central, lower portion of the tooth in which the nerves & blood vessels lie. |
| Quid | Dropping of partially masticated food from the mouth. |
| Quidding | Dropping of partially masticated food from the mouth. |
| Reserve Crown | The part of the crown yet to erupt that lies below the gum line. |
| Rostral | Relating to the front i.e. of the oral cavity or a tooth. |
| Sagittal | Anatomical plane running the length of the human or animal body which splits it into two halves. |
| Secondary Sinusitis | Often related to chronic periapical infection of the caudle maxillary cheek teeth. |
| Sinusitis | Inflammation of the membrane lining of a sinus or sinuses. |
| Supernumerary | An extra tooth that is not a normal part of dentition. |
| Tempromandibular Joint | TMJ, Either of the joints connecting mandible with the temporal bones of the skull. |
| TMJ | Tempromandibular Joint, Either of the joints connecting mandible with the temporal bones of the skull. |
| Transverse | Across a longitudinal plane or direction i.e. from lingual to buccal. |
| Unilateral | Occurring on, or effecting one side only. |
| Vestigial | No longer functional: having become degenerate or functionless in the course of time i.e. Wolf teeth |
| Wolf teeth | The first premolar, vestigial teeth which interfere with the bit. |
